Hier ist sie. Die endgültige Stadl-isation des Prog. Das Opium Cartel dealt an dieser Stelle und in diesem Hood einzig und allein mit Lakritzstangen und Lollipops. Auch auf seinem dritten Soloalbum wartet der Keyboarder der eigentlich ganz okayen norwegischen Progmetaller White Willow Jacob Holm-Lupo mit einem auch näher bezeichneten Arsenal an Tasteninstrumenten auf, die nicht nur verhindern können, dass „Valor“ in einem breiigen Sound aus Prog Pop und Prog Schlager versinkt, sondern diesen auch gnadenlos erschaffen. Mit Sängerin Silje Huleboer als Muse inszenierte Holm-Lupo beeindruckend spannungsarme Songs, die mit Rock so viel zu tun haben wie Andrea Berg-Konzerte mit Headbanging (möchte jetzt aber nicht drauf wetten, ob das nicht doch schon einmal vorgekommen ist).
Das so entstandene Liedgut wie ‚In The Streets‘, ‚Slow Run‘, ‚Under Thunder‘ oder ‚The Curfew Bell‘ ist der Beweis dafür, dass der Progressive Rock mit Alben wie diesem komplett in der Sackgasse gelandet ist und an Belanglosigkeit kaum noch zu übertreffen ist. Einzig und allein Airbag-Kollege Bjørn Riis bewahrt mit seiner wie immer bestätigten Performance in den Instrumentals ‚A Question Of Re-Entry‘ und ‚A Maelstrom Of Stars‘ dieses Machwerk vor dem Totalabsturz, das mit dem Plastikpop in Form des Ratt-Klassikers ‚What’s It Gonna Be‘, gesungen von Zumas Alexander Stenerud, entsprechend gehaltvoll ausklingt …

Es kommt nicht oft vor, dass Künstler sich z.B. wg. größerer Probleme mit oder eindeutiger Irrtümer in einer Rezension melden. Der von vielen von uns grundsätzlich enorm geschätzte Jacob hat sich allerdings schwer enttäuscht über diesen Text gezeigt und betont, dass das Album schon qua Konzept überhaupt gar kein Rock sein wollte (sondern ProgPop, siehe unten). Es ist wohl nur fair, dazu den Promotion-Text zu zitieren:
“The Opium Cartel’s 3rd album, Valor, is a record about naïve but brave dreams. These are songs about the hubris and optimism of childhood and youth. That period of life where everything seems sure to happen just the way you imagine: You will fall in love with the most beautiful girl in the world and she will love you back. You will become a pilot or an astronaut or defy gravity in some other way. You will explode into a world of color and wonder. You will never be disappointed or let down. You will take every risk without fear of failure.
These are also songs about that bittersweet moment when you start to realize that things may be a little different than you imagined. Not all things, but some.
Musically the album takes inspiration from a variety of predominantly 1980s sources, from The Blue Nile and Shriekback, via late Roxy Music to the prog-pop of 80s Alan Parsons Project and Camel. The period feel is amplified by Holm-Lupo’s use of exclusively hardware synthesizers iconic to the era, like the Oberheim Matrix-6 and Yamaha DX7.”
