Godthrymm – Distortions

Hier kommt wieder einmal ein schweres Geschütz auf uns zu. Die beiden Ex-My Dying Bride/Solstice Hamish Glencross und Shaun “Winter” Taylor-Steels (yupp, Letzterer war gar für eine überschaubare Dauer bei Anathema) haben sich mit Godthrymm eine lauschige Band für ebenso lauschige Musik jenseits der Doom-Schranke erschaffen. Zusammen mit Glencross-Ehefrau Catherine und Bassist “Sasquatch” Bob Crolla hauen die Beiden nun mit “Distortion” das zweite Album raus, das zusammen mit dem 2020er-Machwerk “Reflection” und der Zukunftsmusik “Projection” die “Visions”-Trilogie ergibt.

Endlos, weil hin und wieder in epischen Abgründen wandelnd, ergehen sich Godthrymm in schwerem Doom’n Metal, der hinsichtlich Catherine Glencross‘ Gesang und Keyboardspiel schon mal in Gothic-Bereiche abdriftet, was mit an Sicherheit grenzender Wahrscheinlichkeit auch intendiert ist:

“I absolutely wanted to create a much more layered and complex arrangement in the sound. Totally amping up the contrasts to the extreme—the light shines brighter, and the darker depths are vast trenches. There is a lot more harmony and melancholy for much of it, but also some slab-heavy riffing, too. We wanted a total progression in the production and more class and clarity in the sound, as opposed to Reflections, which could get quite dense in tone.” (Hamish Glencross)

Schon der Opener ‘As Titans’ schleudert uns mit seinen zwölf Minuten in nicht näher zu beschreibende Abgründe, wobei die Stimmungen neben schwer drückend schon als atmosphärisch zu charakterisieren sind. ‘Unseen, Unheard’ kommt mit Extinction Of Mankind-Guitarero Scoot Gladok, das mächtige ‘Follow Me’ mit My Dying Bride-Frontmann Aaron Stainthorpe. “Distortions” ist eine Stunde Schwerstarbeit, die auch beim Hörer an die Substanz geht…
